llms.txt Generator

Enter your site name, a short summary and the important pages; preview a format-checked llms.txt file, then copy or download it.

The tool checks the format and URL syntax; it does not test whether the pages resolve. llms.txt is a community proposal and guarantees neither ranking nor AI citations.

Reading the result

The output follows the proposal's order: the site name as an H1, a blockquote summary beneath it, an optional note and link lists grouped under H2 headings. Each link carries the page name in brackets followed by the full address in parentheses. A red warning means a missing title, an invalid address or a duplicate URL; fix it before publishing. The link and byte counts show the file's scope and size.

Setting up the file correctly

Which pages belong in the file

The file is a curated reading list, not a copy of the sitemap. Choose the 10-20 pages a reader should see first; product documentation, API reference, installation and core concept pages belong at the top. Adding the whole blog archive or every category page makes the file longer and less selective. Give each link a short note that says what the page actually covers.

Short paths and section names

When a site address is present, short paths such as /services are expanded to full addresses; without a site address the tool rejects a short path. Pages that share a section name are collected under one H2. If you put secondary sources under Optional, the tool moves that group to the end. Leaving the section name empty puts the page in the default group.

The difference between preview and live file

The preview validates the text format only. After uploading the file to the root as UTF-8, separately check that https://yoursite.com/llms.txt returns HTTP 200 and that every link resolves. A CDN or hosting rule can serve the file as HTML; the response content type should be text. This is the one step the tool cannot do for you.

Remaining questions

Where should the file be uploaded?

In the domain's root, at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. In Next.js, Nuxt or a similar framework, place it in the public folder. The proposal also allows subdirectories, but the root is the common choice. After uploading, open it in a browser and confirm the 200 response.

Does the tool send my data to a server?

No. The input is processed in the browser only; the file is composed and downloaded there. Reloading the page clears the form. If you want to keep a draft after closing the tool, download the file or copy its content.

Will this file improve rankings or AI citations?

Independent studies have not found a measurable relationship between the file and AI citations, and Google Search does not use it. Documentation and API sites may add it to give coding agents a readable entry point. If you expect ranking or citation gains, start with bot access, server-rendered HTML, indexability and brand mentions instead.

Method, sources and author

The tool follows the llmstxt.org format proposal and Jeremy Howard's proposal of 3 September 2024. Input is processed in the browser; no text is sent to or stored on a server. The tool checks format and URL syntax but does not test whether pages resolve.
