Using UTM parameters
Why naming has to stay consistent
utm_source and utm_medium are case-sensitive. “Newsletter” and “newsletter” become two separate sources in a report. Write campaign names in lowercase with hyphens and keep one shared list for the team. This tool does not correct the values you type; it only warns when it sees capitals or spaces. Do not reuse a source name after its campaign ends.
A real example: the tools page announcement
The try-the-example button fills the live /araclar/ page with newsletter / email / araclar-lansmani. The output is: https://mervealgan.com/araclar/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=araclar-lansmani. The newsletter link points there; analytics groups the campaign as “araclar-lansmani”, the source as “newsletter” and the channel as “email”. term and content are left blank, so they are not added.
What to check before sharing the link
Open the link in a tab, confirm the parameters survive in the address bar and look for the campaign in your analytics real-time report. Redirecting short links can drop parameters; if you shorten anything, shorten the UTM-tagged address, not the destination. Do not add UTM to internal links: every click starts a new session source and can overwrite the original campaign.
