Intent Mapping: Turning User Intent into SEO Strategy

What is intent mapping? The four core search-intent types, a beyond-TOFU/MOFU/BOFU approach, and content strategy from a GEO perspective.

What Is Intent Mapping?

Intent mapping is the process of classifying targeted keywords by what the user actually wants when searching and mapping them to the right content type. Different intents can sit behind the same keyword; reading search intent correctly is the foundation of producing content that meets the user's expectation.

The Four Core Search Intents

Search intent is generally examined in four core categories. This classification lets us understand which stage of the search journey the user is in.

  • Informational - The user wants to learn about a topic; queries like 'what is' and 'how to' fall here.

  • Navigational - The user wants to reach a specific brand, site or page; for example searching a brand name.

  • Commercial - The user researches before buying; comparison, review and 'best of' queries.

  • Transactional - The user is ready to complete an action; carrying intent to buy, sign up or download.

Mapping Keywords to Intent

Assign each keyword to one of the four intent categories one by one. Modifier words in the query (for example 'how', 'best', 'buy', 'price') are strong clues to intent. In ambiguous cases, looking at the actual search results is the most reliable method: the content type Google surfaces for that query reveals the dominant intent.

Content-Type Mapping

Each intent type is best served by a different content format. Informational intent is served with comprehensive guides and blog posts, commercial intent with comparison and review pages, and transactional intent with product and conversion-focused landing pages. Navigational intent is usually met with brand pages and clear navigation.

GEO and Intent Mapping

Generative AI systems also produce answers by interpreting the user's intent. For informational queries, content with clear definitions and structured explanations is cited more often by AI. Mapping your content to the correct intent raises your relevance in both classic search results and AI answers.
